Robert Brownson and Kristi Brownson will represent the firm at the annual Social Justice UNCORKED fundraising event in Minneapolis on September 23, 2016 on behalf of the Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services (SMRLS).

SMRLS provides free, high-quality legal help to low-income people in critical civil matters. For more than 100 years, SMRLS has helped individuals and families secure and protect their basic needs, maintaining freedom from hunger, homelessness, sickness, and abuse. Its mission may be summarized by its slogan, “Because Justice Matters.”

Brownson PLLC is pleased to have been a supporter of the SMRLS Campaign for Legal Aid for over a decade, and is proud to support the mission and critical work performed by the dedicated and talented SMRLS staff.

An example of the excellent work provided by SMRLS, which is supported by generous donations from Brownson PLLC and many others, is a case highlighted in the SMRLS 2016 Campaign for Legal Aid fundraising campaign. The case involved “Jane,” who came to SMRLS after her ex-boyfriend and former roommate had been charged with domestic abuse toward Jane and malicious punishment of Jane’s two-year-old child. She was terrified of him. So scared, in fact, that she visibly shook in the presence of her ex-boyfriend during family court and was unable to present a defense – or even ask him a question – on the stand. Luckily for Jane, her SMRLS attorney was there from the very beginning to advocate throughout the proceeding for her and swiftly obtain a two-year Order for Protection for Jane and her child.
